BLACK HISTORY will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 18th

The public is cordially invited to attend a recognition and celebration of Black History on Tuesday, February 18th at 11:30 am. This event will be held at History Makers Coffee and Café, located at 509 West 15th Street in Anniston. While Black History is celebrated throughout the year, we dedicate special attention to it during the month of February. We are so excited to be able to celebrate in a historically Black building in a historically Black community.

General Jackson will be the keynote speaker for the event.  As he states, "he didn’t blow into this town; he was born here." Jackson also emphasizes that this area was the Black business district, noting that "It was truly a city within a city."

Black people’s work has been transformational and the 2025 Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” sets out to highlight and celebrate the potent impact of this work.

Anniston has long been positively shaped by many Black community leaders. Join us in recognizing local leaders General Jackson, Georgia Calhoun, Anna Washington, Deborah Foster, Maddie Miller, Nathaniel Davis, Jimmy Jackson, and Rep. Barbara Boyd, who are highlighted in the video, "A City Within a City."  See the video here:

Then help us celebrate local ‘Black History Makers’ in person at HMC Café on Tuesday, February 18th at 11:30 am.  Table seating is limited, so please RSVP to calcodem2019@gmail.com as soon as possible. Extra chairs will be set up along the walls for overflow. This event is sponsored by the Calhoun County Democratic Party. Attendees will pay for their lunch. The service is great, the food is delicious and reasonably priced!
